How do I find my NOC code?
Start from your duties, not your job title. Describe the tasks you do most days, or search your title, then open the NOC description that comes up. IRCC accepts a NOC code when your work matches the actions in its lead statement and most of its main duties. The second digit of the code is the TEER category, and TEER 0 to 3 counts as skilled work for Express Entry. Before you put a code on an application, read the official description on the Statistics Canada NOC site.

From your duties to a NOC code in four steps
Describe your work
Write two or three sentences about what you do most days, in your own words. Add the job title you use if you like. Already know your title? Search it instead.
The finder compares
It ranks all 516 NOC unit groups by how well their titles and duties match your words, then an AI model reads the closest descriptions and picks up to three codes, with the reason for each.
Check the duties
Open each suggested code and read its lead statement and main duties. The right code is the one that describes most of what you actually did.
Use it
Put the code on your Express Entry profile or provincial application, ask your employer for a reference letter that matches it, and build a resume around the same duties.
Your job title can point to the wrong code
Employers name jobs however they like. The NOC classifies the work itself, so two people called “supervisor” can be in different TEER categories, and the same work can carry many titles.
| Job title | What you mostly do | NOC code |
|---|---|---|
| Personal support worker | care for residents in a hospital or long-term care home | 33102 Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates |

| Restaurant supervisor | supervise staff and shifts, order supplies | 62020 Food service supervisors |
| Restaurant manager | plan, budget and run the restaurant, hire staff | 60030 Restaurant and food service managers |
| Data analyst | build reports and dashboards from databases | 21223 Database analysts and data administrators |
| Data analyst | build statistical or machine learning models | 21211 Data scientists |

What the TEER category tells you
The second digit of every NOC 2021 code is its TEER category: Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities. Read the full TEER guide with every job in each category.
| TEER | What the job usually needs | Express Entry (FSW, CEC) |
|---|---|---|
| TEER 0 | Management occupations | Skilled work |
| TEER 1 | Usually a university degree | Skilled work |
| TEER 2 | Usually a college diploma, an apprenticeship of 2 or more years, or a supervisory role | Skilled work |
| TEER 3 | Usually a college diploma, an apprenticeship of less than 2 years, or more than 6 months of on-the-job training | Skilled work |
| TEER 4 | Usually a high school diploma or several weeks of on-the-job training | Not skilled work |
| TEER 5 | Usually a short work demonstration and no formal education | Not skilled work |
Where you will need your NOC code
Express Entry
Every job in your work history needs a NOC code. The Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Canadian Experience Class count TEER 0 to 3 work; the Federal Skilled Trades Program counts listed trades.
Category-based draws
IRCC invites candidates by occupation in healthcare, STEM, trades, education and other categories, and each one is a list of NOC codes. See the 2026 category lists
Provincial nominee programs
Most provincial streams name the occupations they want by NOC code, and several have streams for TEER 4 and 5 jobs that Express Entry leaves out.
LMIAs and work permits
Employers use the NOC code to set the prevailing wage for an LMIA, and work permit applications ask for it too.
Five common NOC mistakes
- Choosing by job title alone. Read the lead statement and main duties; they decide the code.
- Using an old four-digit NOC 2016 code. IRCC has used NOC 2021 five-digit codes since November 16, 2022.
- Reaching for a higher TEER. If your duties are TEER 4 work, a TEER 3 code will not survive an officer’s review.
- Copying the NOC text into your reference letter. Letters should describe your real duties in your employer’s words, and line up with the NOC without repeating it.
- One code for every job. Each job you held gets its own code, based on what you did there.
Turn NOC duties into resume bullets
Canadian resumes never list NOC codes, but the NOC duties make a good checklist. Say the same work in your own words and add the result.
- Before
- Take orders and relay to kitchen and bar staff
- After
- Took orders for up to 40 covers a shift and relayed them to the kitchen and bar with no missed tickets
- Why it works
- A NOC duty says what the job involves. A resume bullet says how well you did it.
- Before
- Greet patients, schedule appointments, using manual or computerized systems
- After
- Booked 60 appointments a day in Accuro and kept the clinic’s no-show rate under 5%
- Why it works
- Name the software and add a number an employer can picture.
How far you can trust the result
The finder uses the official NOC 2021 Version 1.0 data published by Statistics Canada, and the 2026 category lists published by IRCC. Its suggestions are a strong starting point, not a decision: only an IRCC officer decides whether your experience fits a code, so always read the full description before you apply.
You do not need an account. What you type is not saved to a profile. Results are kept in a cache for 30 days so the same search answers instantly. Avoid typing names or other personal details.

Frequently asked questions
What is a NOC code?
A NOC code is the five-digit number Canada uses to classify an occupation in the National Occupational Classification. NOC 2021 has 516 of them. The first digit is the broad category, the second is the TEER category and the last three identify the occupation.
Is this NOC code finder free?
Yes. Searching by job title and matching your duties with AI are both free and need no account. There is a daily limit on AI matches per visitor to keep it free for everyone.
How accurate is the AI NOC finder?
It reads the official duties of the closest occupations, so it usually finds the right code or a close one in the top three. Treat it as a shortlist: open each code and check that its lead statement and most of its main duties describe your work.
What if two NOC codes seem to fit?
Choose the one whose lead statement and main duties describe most of what you did, most of the time. If your job changed over the years, each period can have its own code.
Can I use NOC 2016 codes?
No. IRCC moved to NOC 2021 on November 16, 2022, and four-digit NOC 2016 codes are no longer accepted on new Express Entry profiles. Search your old job title here to find the five-digit code.
Is a TEER 4 or TEER 5 job eligible for Express Entry?
Not for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class or the Federal Skilled Trades Program. Some provincial nominee programs and other pathways do accept them. See how TEER works.
Which NOC codes are in the Express Entry category draws?
IRCC publishes a list of NOC codes for each category. For 2026 they cover healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education, transport, physicians, senior managers, researchers and military recruits. See every code.
Should I put my NOC code on my resume?
No. Canadian employers do not expect it, and immigration details stay off a resume. Use the NOC duties as a checklist for your bullets instead.
