What is a NOC code?

A NOC code is the five-digit number Canada uses to classify a job in the National Occupational Classification (NOC). The current version, NOC 2021, has 516 occupations, called unit groups. The first digit is the broad category, the second digit is the TEER category (the training, education, experience and responsibilities the job usually needs), and the full five digits identify the occupation. IRCC, ESDC and the provinces use the code for Express Entry, provincial nominee programs, work permits and LMIAs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my NOC code?

Search your job title above, or describe your duties in the AI NOC code finder. Then open the code and check that its lead statement and most of its main duties describe your work. The duties decide the code, not the job title.

What is the difference between NOC 2016 and NOC 2021?

NOC 2016 used four-digit codes and skill levels (0, A, B, C and D). NOC 2021 uses five-digit codes and six TEER categories, and it split old skill level B into TEER 2 and TEER 3. IRCC switched to NOC 2021 on November 16, 2022.

How many NOC codes are there?

NOC 2021 Version 1.0 has 516 unit groups, in 10 broad categories, 45 major groups, 89 sub-major groups and 162 minor groups.

Can I have more than one NOC code?

Yes. Each job in your work history gets its own code, based on what you did in that job. For the Canadian Experience Class, skilled work in more than one TEER 0 to 3 occupation can count toward the one year you need.

Which NOC codes are in Express Entry category draws?

IRCC publishes a list for each category, from healthcare to trades. See every 2026 list.

Where are the official NOC descriptions?

On the Statistics Canada and ESDC NOC website (noc.statcan.gc.ca). The pages here show the same text from Statistics Canada’s open data, with Express Entry eligibility and Job Bank wages added.
