What does an ATS resume checker do?
An ATS resume checker reads your resume the way an applicant tracking system does and tells you what could go wrong before a recruiter ever sees it. CVMaple's checker scores your resume out of 100 across four areas (ATS compatibility, format and structure, content quality, and Canadian standards) and explains each issue in plain words. Your score and your first three issues are free, with no account.

What an ATS resume checker does for Canadian job seekers
Before a person reads your resume, software usually does. Most large Canadian employers, including the banks, telecoms, hospitals, universities and the federal government, run applications through an applicant tracking system, or ATS. It pulls the text out of your file, sorts it into fields like job title, employer and dates, and lets recruiters search and rank the people who applied.
That is where good resumes get lost. A two-column layout can come through with your skills mixed into your job history. Text inside a table or a text box can vanish. A heading like "My Journey" instead of "Work Experience" can leave a whole section unfiled. None of it shows when you look at the PDF, which is why so many people apply for months, hear nothing, and never find out why.
Nobody outside an employer knows exactly how many resumes get screened out this way, and you will see some very confident numbers online. What recruiters do agree on is simpler: if the system cannot read your resume cleanly, a person is less likely to see it. The fix is not sending more applications. It is making sure the ones you send can be read.
If you are new to Canada this matters even more. Resumes written for other countries often carry a photo, a date of birth or a two-column design, and all three cause trouble here. Our newcomer resume guide covers what else changes.
What an ATS does with your resume
- Pulls out the text and drops anything it cannot read, such as images, icons and some text boxes.
- Files your details into fields: name, contact, job titles, employers, dates, education and skills.
- Lets recruiters search for keywords, often the exact job title and the skills named in the posting.
- Ranks or filters candidates, sometimes with screening questions (work permit, location, licence) asked before anyone opens your resume.
How the CVMaple ATS resume checker works
Upload your resume
Choose a PDF or Word (.docx) file up to 5 MB. On a phone you can pick it from Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or Downloads. You do not need an account.
Get your score
The checker reads the text the way an ATS would and scores it out of 100, with separate scores for ATS compatibility, format and structure, content quality, and Canadian standards. Most reports are ready in under a minute.
Fix what matters most
Issues are marked critical, warning or info, so you can start with the ones most likely to cost you an interview. Each one says what is wrong and why a Canadian employer would care.
Apply with a clean file
Make the changes in your own file, or import your resume into the CVMaple builder, which uses a single-column, ATS-safe layout by default. Then run the check again.
What the checker actually looks at
Four scores, each out of 100. This is what goes into them.
ATS compatibility
Standard section headings, no tables or columns, a skills section with the words recruiters search for, contact details at the top, clear job titles and employer names, and dates in one consistent format.
Format and structure
Length (1 to 2 pages is normal in Canada), a sensible section order, even spacing, a professional email address and no photo. It also flags "References available upon request", which most recruiters here read as filler.
Content quality
A short professional summary instead of an objective, bullets that open with an action verb, results with numbers in them, the right verb tense, no "I" or "my", and none of the phrases every recruiter skims past, like "hard worker".
Canadian standards
City and province only (Toronto, ON) with no street address or postal code, a phone number written like 416-555-0199, Canadian spelling such as colour and centre, and no SIN, date of birth, marital status or driver’s licence number.
Why a Canada-specific ATS check matters
A checker built for the US market will pass things that look odd to a Canadian recruiter and miss things that only matter here.
| Detail | On a Canadian resume | Common elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Photo | Leave it off | Expected in much of Europe, Asia and the Middle East |
| Date of birth, marital status | Leave them off | Standard on many international CVs |
| Address | City and province, for example Calgary, AB | Full street address |
| Spelling | Canadian: colour, centre, cheque, licence (the noun) | US: color, center, check, license |
| Length | 1 to 2 pages for most roles | One page in the US; three or more on many international CVs |
| Dates | Month and year, for example March 2022 | Numbers only (03/2022) or years only |
| Headings | Work Experience, Education, Skills | Creative headings, or "Curriculum Vitae" as the title |
Spelling alone will not sink an application, but it is one of the small signals that tells a hiring manager you know the market. Consistency matters more than anything: pick Canadian spelling and use it everywhere. The same goes for dates. "March 2022 to Present" reads cleanly to people and software. A mix of "03/22", "2022" and "Mar. 2022" does not.
If you would rather start from something that already follows these rules, the Canadian resume builder handles layout, dates and section names for you, and the Canadian resume format guide explains each rule in more detail.
ATS platforms Canadian employers commonly use
You can usually tell which system you are dealing with from the application page. The web address or the small logo at the bottom tends to give it away.
| System | Where you will see it | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Workday | Banks, insurers, large retailers and universities | It asks you to confirm your history after the upload. Check what it filled in, because a messy file shows up here first. |
| Taleo (Oracle) | Large employers, hospitals and some governments, often on older career sites | An older parser. Keep to one column, plain headings and a Word file or a simple PDF. |
| SAP SuccessFactors | Large companies, utilities and some cities and provinces | Long forms with screening questions that are often read before your resume. |
| iCIMS | Mid-size and large companies, healthcare and retail | Recruiters search by keyword, so use the job title from the posting where it honestly fits. |
| Greenhouse and Lever | Tech companies and startups | Recruiters often read each resume themselves, but they still search and filter. Clear titles and dates help. |
| GC Jobs | The federal public service | Screening questions carry most of the weight. See the Government of Canada resume guide. |
The fixes that make the biggest difference
These come up on most of the resumes we see. Each one takes a few minutes.
- Before
- Responsible for managing social media accounts.
- After
- Grew Instagram following from 2,400 to 9,100 in eight months by planning a weekly content calendar.
- Why it works
- It starts with a verb, shows a result, and gives the recruiter a number to remember.
- Before
- My Journey
- After
- Work Experience
- Why it works
- An ATS looks for standard headings to decide where your job history starts. A creative name can leave the whole section unread.
- Before
- Toronto, Ontario, M5V 2T6, Canada | DOB: 14/03/1994
- After
- Toronto, ON | 416-555-0199 | priya.s@email.com
- Why it works
- City and province are enough. Canadian employers do not expect your date of birth, and leaving it off keeps the focus on your work.
- Before
- Jan 21 to 3/23
- After
- January 2021 to March 2023
- Why it works
- One date format, written out, reads the same to people and to parsers.
Take these out before you apply
- A photo or headshot
- Date of birth, age, marital status, gender or nationality
- Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) or driver’s licence number
- A full street address and postal code
- "References available upon request"
- Tables, text boxes, icons and skill bars
Who should check their resume first
Newcomers to Canada
You probably had a strong resume back home. The trouble is that strong looks different here, and nobody tells you that when you land. The check shows the photo, personal details and formatting that do not travel well, so you are not left guessing. Newcomer resume guide
PGWP holders
Your permit clock is running and the job market will not wait. Find out quickly what your resume is missing, fix it once, and stop sending the same file over and over wondering why nobody calls. PGWP resume guide
New graduates
Without years of experience, your wording has to work harder. Most new grads have more relevant experience than they think. They just describe it in the wrong words. The check shows whether your co-op, projects and part-time work are coming through. Resume guide for students
Career switchers
Your experience is real, but the vocabulary is from your old field. Changing a few words so they match the new one is usually quicker than a full rewrite, and often makes more difference. Tailor it with the AI builder
Frequently asked questions
What is an ATS resume checker?
It is a tool that reads your resume the way an applicant tracking system would and points out what might stop it from being read properly. CVMaple checks ATS compatibility, format and structure, content quality and Canadian standards, and scores each one out of 100.
Is the CVMaple ATS resume checker free?
Yes. Upload a resume and you get your overall score, the four category scores and your first three issues with fixes, with no account and no card. A free account shows every issue and saves the report. Step-by-step fixes for every issue are part of Pro.
Is this checker built for Canada?
Yes. On top of general ATS checks, it looks for the things Canadian recruiters expect: city and province instead of a full address, no photo or date of birth, Canadian spelling, 1 to 2 pages, and standard section names. It can also run in French for jobs in Quebec.
How does ATS screening work in Canada?
Most large employers use an ATS such as Workday, Taleo, SuccessFactors or iCIMS. The system pulls the text from your resume into fields, recruiters search those fields for keywords and job titles, and screening questions may filter people out before anyone reads a resume. If the text comes through scrambled, you can be passed over even when you are qualified.
How long does the check take?
Most reports are ready in under a minute. You do not need an account to see your score.
What is a good ATS score?
There is no pass mark that employers use, so treat the number as a guide. On our scale most resumes score between 40 and 65 the first time. 65 to 80 is solid, and above 80 means the basics are in good shape. Clear every critical issue before you chase the last few points.
Can an ATS read a PDF resume?
Yes, as long as the PDF was made from text, for example exported from Word, Google Docs or a resume builder. A scanned page or a photo saved as PDF is just an image, and most systems will read nothing from it. If a posting asks for Word, send a .docx.
Should I use a two-column resume in Canada?
It is safer not to. Many systems read straight across the page, so two columns can come through with your skills mixed into your job history. A single column with clear headings reads correctly everywhere.
Does the checker compare my resume to a job posting?
The free check reviews your resume on its own, against ATS and Canadian standards. To see which keywords from a particular posting are missing, paste the posting into the CVMaple builder. Job tailoring is part of Pro.
Can I check a French resume?
Yes. The check can run in French, which helps for jobs in Quebec and bilingual federal roles. Our French resume guide covers the Quebec conventions.
Is my resume kept private?
Your resume is analyzed to produce the report and is not shared with employers. If you create an account, the report is saved to it so you can come back later.
What should I do after I get my score?
Fix the critical issues first, then the warnings. You can edit your own file, or import it into the CVMaple builder to rebuild it in an ATS-safe layout. Then check it again before you apply.
Upload your resume. See the score.
