Why CVMaple is a resume builder Canada job seekers can trust
Most people assume resume rules are the same everywhere. They are not. Canadian employers expect things that are quite different from US, UK and international formats. Some of it is obvious once you know it. Most of it is the kind of thing nobody tells you when you start applying.
A good Canadian resume builder should do more than drop your work history into a nice-looking file. It should help you use the section names Canadian recruiters recognize, keep personal details that do not belong off the page, and put your strongest results in the first half of the page. It should also make it easier to use the words from the job posting before you export.
That is why CVMaple starts with Canadian format. You can still edit every line, but the structure begins in the right place: profile, work experience, education, skills, and the keywords for your role. The result looks familiar to hiring managers here and stays readable for ATS software.
What the builder gets right for you
- No photo, age, marital status or SIN. These are standard in many countries and a red flag in Canada, mostly because they tell a recruiter the resume was written for another market.
- Dates as month and year. March 2024, not 03/2024 or 2024 alone. Public sector systems in particular are set up for this.
- Standard section names. "Work Experience" is what Canadian recruiters and ATS software look for. Creative headings can leave a section unfiled.
- Canadian spelling throughout. Colour, centre, organize, licence. Pick one standard and keep it everywhere.
- 1 to 2 pages. Long enough to show your work, short enough to get read.
These rules are built into every template and every suggestion, not bolted on at the end. If you want the reasoning behind each one, the Canadian resume format guide walks through them, and the ATS resume checker will show you where an existing resume falls short.
How the resume builder works
Start with your experience
Type it in, or import an old resume (PDF or Word). You can also bring in your LinkedIn profile by saving it as a PDF from LinkedIn and uploading that. It takes about 2 minutes.
Build it in Canadian format
The builder lays everything out to Canadian standards: section names, date format, spelling and order. The AI can draft or rewrite a section for you, and you review and change whatever you like.
Check it before you send it
Run the ATS check to see a score out of 100 and the issues most likely to cost you an interview. Fix them in the editor and check again.
Download and apply
Export a clean PDF that reads well to people and to hiring software. Your first download is free.
What CVMaple builds into every resume
Not a template filler. A builder that knows what Canadian employers actually screen for, with each feature marked by the plan it comes with.
Canadian ATS formatting
Every template comes out in a format ATS software can parse. No tables, no columns, and no header tricks that scramble the text.
Canadian spelling
Flags US spellings like color and center. Small spelling differences can count as different words to an ATS, so consistency matters.
Job application tracker
Keep every application in one place. See what you sent, when you sent it and what you heard back.
Keyword matching
Paste a job posting in. The builder shows which keywords from it are missing from your resume and where they could honestly fit.
French resume conversion
Applying in Quebec or to a bilingual role? Convert your English resume to French, set out to Canadian standards. See the French resume guide.
Cover letters
Write a cover letter matched to the posting, with the same keywords and tone as your resume.
What goes on a Canadian resume
The builder gives you these sections in this order. Here is what belongs in each one.
| Section | What to include | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Contact details | Name, city and province, phone, email, and a LinkedIn URL if you have one | No street address, photo, date of birth or SIN |
| Professional profile | Three or four lines on who you are, your field and your strongest result | Replaces the old "Objective". Write it last. |
| Work experience | Job title, employer, city, month and year dates, then 3 to 6 bullets per role | Most recent job first. Start each bullet with a verb. |
| Education | Credential, school, city and country, year finished | For degrees from outside Canada, a WES evaluation can help an employer compare it. |
| Skills | Tools, software, languages and certifications that match the job | Use the posting’s own words where they are true for you. |
| Optional | Volunteer work, certifications, languages, projects | Canadian volunteer work counts, especially if you are new here. |
You do not need a "References" section. Canadian employers ask for references near the end of the process, and "References available upon request" only takes up space. If you are unsure how much to include, the Canadian resume template shows a finished example.
Why generic resume builders fall short in Canada
Most popular resume builders were made for a US or global audience, and Canada came later if at all. That matters more than it sounds.
| Feature | Generic builders | CVMaple |
|---|---|---|
| Default format | Often US style: one page, US spelling | Canadian format from the start |
| Layout | Many templates use columns, icons and skill bars | Single column, plain headings, ATS-safe |
| Personal details | Some templates have a photo slot | No photo slot, no date of birth field |
| Resume check | Sometimes a general ATS score | Scored against Canadian standards too |
| French | Rarely offered | Conversion to French on Pro |
Design tools like Canva make beautiful resumes, and for a portfolio or a networking event that can be fine. For an online application, the columns, icons and text boxes that make those designs look good are the same things ATS software reads badly.
A generic resume builder gives you a resume. CVMaple gives you a resume that works in Canada. Whether you are a newcomer to Canada or have been here for years, the formatting rules are the same.
Bullets that Canadian recruiters actually read
A good layout gets your resume read. The wording decides what happens next. Here are three rewrites of the kind the builder suggests.
- Before
- Responsible for customer service at a busy store.
- After
- Served 120+ customers a day at a high-volume pharmacy and kept a 4.8 out of 5 service rating.
- Why it works
- Numbers tell the recruiter the size of the job in one line.
- Before
- Worked on different projects in the finance team.
- After
- Built a month-end reconciliation template in Excel that cut close time from 6 days to 4.
- Why it works
- Say what you made and what changed because of it. "Worked on" hides both.
- Before
- Hardworking team player with good communication skills.
- After
- Trained 6 new hires on the POS system and wrote the shift handover checklist the store still uses.
- Why it works
- Every resume claims soft skills. Showing one in action is what makes it believable.

A few questions we hear a lot
Is CVMaple's resume builder free?
Yes, it is free to start. A free account lets you build 2 resumes a month with every template, and your first PDF download is free. After that you can buy single downloads from $2.49 or go unlimited with Pro. Cover letters come with Elite.
How is a Canadian resume different from an American resume?
Canadian resumes leave out photos, age, marital status and your Social Insurance Number. They use Canadian spelling, often run to 2 pages where a US resume is usually one, and use standard section names and month and year dates. A resume built for the US market can land badly with Canadian employers even when the experience is strong.
Can newcomers to Canada use this resume builder?
Yes. CVMaple was built with newcomers in mind. The builder walks you through Canadian resume format, flags international formatting habits, and helps you describe your experience the way Canadian employers expect to read it.
Does the resume builder check for ATS compatibility?
The templates are single-column with standard headings, so they start out ATS-safe. You can also run the ATS resume check before you download to get a score out of 100 and a list of issues to fix.
How long does it take to build a resume?
Most people finish a first draft in about 10 minutes. Importing an old resume or your LinkedIn PDF is quicker. The builder sets up the structure and you review and adjust.
Can I import my LinkedIn profile?
Yes. On LinkedIn, open your profile, choose More, then Save to PDF, and upload that file to CVMaple. You can also import an existing resume as a PDF or Word file.
How long should a Canadian resume be?
One to two pages for most jobs. New graduates can usually fit on one. Experienced professionals often need two. Federal government applications are a different case, covered in our Government of Canada resume guide.
Should my resume be a PDF or a Word file?
A PDF made from text is the safest choice for most applications, and it is what CVMaple exports. If a posting asks for Word, follow the posting.
Can I make a French resume?
Yes. French conversion is part of Pro (3 a month) and Elite (unlimited), and the $3.99 seven-day trial includes it. The French resume guide covers the Quebec conventions.
Do Canadian employers still expect a cover letter?
Many postings list it as optional, but a short, specific letter still helps when you are changing fields, explaining a move to Canada, or applying to a small employer. Cover letters come with Elite.
