How to write an accountant resume in Canada
Accounting is a competitive, credential-driven field in Canada, so your resume needs to make your standing clear right away. State your CPA designation status, or where you are in the CPA process, near the top. For internationally trained accountants, your credential assessment and any CPA equivalency or exemptions are critical and should not be buried.
Canadian employers screen accounting resumes for standards, software, and the type of work you have done. Name the frameworks you work under, such as ASPE or IFRS, the systems you use, including QuickBooks, Sage, SAP, or NetSuite, and whether your experience is in public practice, industry, or both. Clear keyword alignment matters because finance roles are heavily filtered by ATS.
Lead with results, not duties. Faster month-end closes, clean audits, reconciliations, cost savings, and process improvements all show value. Keep the layout clean and single-column so your designations, software, and achievements parse correctly.
The layout rules that apply to every job are in our Canadian resume format guide. If you would rather start from a blank page that already follows them, use a free Canadian resume template.

Work experience bullet examples
Each one starts with what you did and ends with a result. Keep the shape and put your own numbers in.
- Managed full-cycle accounting and reduced month-end close from 10 days to 6
- Reconciled 15+ accounts monthly with zero audit adjustments over two years
- Prepared financial statements under ASPE for a company with $20M in revenue
- Processed bi-weekly payroll for 120 employees with full compliance
- Identified and corrected a recurring error that saved $40,000 annually
- Supported year-end audits, delivering clean working papers ahead of deadline
Certifications and licences that help
Write each one out in full with the issuing body and the date. An employer should never have to guess what an acronym means or whether it has expired.
- CPA Designation (or in progress): State whether you are designated, a candidate, or pursuing the CPA program. The first thing employers check.
- CPA Credential Assessment: For internationally trained accountants, shows equivalency and any course exemptions.
- QuickBooks / Sage Certification: Validates the software skills employers screen for.
- WES Credential Evaluation: Helps demonstrate the equivalency of an international accounting degree.
What recruiters wish you knew
State your CPA status first
Designated, candidate, or in progress, plus any credential assessment for internationally trained accountants. Employers screen on designation before anything else.
Match the framework and software keywords
Name ASPE or IFRS and your exact systems (QuickBooks, Sage, SAP, NetSuite). Finance roles are heavily ATS-filtered on these precise terms.
Quantify financial impact
Faster closes, clean audits, savings, and reconciliation accuracy turn a duty list into evidence of value. Numbers carry an accounting resume.
The section order for an accountant resume
Top to bottom, in the order a hiring manager in this field wants to read it.
- Contact details. City, phone, email and a LinkedIn link if yours is up to date.
- Professional summary. Your role, years of experience and the area or software you know best.
- Skills and software. Programs and systems by name, plus the languages you work in.
- Work experience. Volume and accuracy numbers in every role.
- Education and designations. Diploma or degree, and designations such as CPA.
- Certifications. MOS, QuickBooks or other courses, with the year.
What recruiters check first
The software you use every day (Excel, Outlook, QuickBooks), accuracy, and the volume you handled. Where to put it: Skills, then numbers in your bullets.
Common mistakes on accountant resumes
These come up again and again, and each one is quick to fix.
Writing CPA before you are designated
If you are still in the program, write "CPA candidate" or the module you have reached. Using the letters before you hold them is a real problem, and it will be checked.
Copying tasks from the job description
"Responsible for accounts payable" says what the job was, not how well you did it. Say how many invoices, how fast, and what you fixed, like a reconciliation cleared or a late-payment penalty avoided.
Leaving out the industries you know
Construction, non-profit and manufacturing accounting each have their quirks, such as job costing, fund accounting or inventory valuation. Name the industries you have worked in so a similar employer sees you can start fast.
Before you send it
Six quick checks. Each takes less than a minute.
- The job title in your summary matches the one in the posting.
- Every certification is written out in full, with the issuing body and the expiry date.
- At least half of your bullets include a number.
- There is no photo, date of birth, marital status or SIN.
- It is saved as a PDF, unless the posting asks for a Word file.
- You ran it through the free resume check and fixed what it found.
Accountant resume FAQ
How does an internationally trained accountant write a Canadian resume?
State your credential assessment status and CPA equivalency or progress at the top, then present your overseas experience in Canadian format using ASPE or IFRS language and the software you know. Focus on quantified results and note your goal of building Canadian experience.
Where do accounting credentials go on the resume?
Near the top, after your contact details and summary. CPA status, credential assessments, and key software are the first things employers and ATS systems screen for, so make them immediately visible.
What should an accountant resume emphasize in Canada?
Designation status, reporting frameworks (ASPE, IFRS), accounting software, the type of experience (public practice or industry), and quantified results such as faster closes, clean audits, and cost savings.
How long should an accountant resume be?
One to two pages. Use a clean single-column layout so ATS systems read your designations, software, and achievements correctly. Lead with credentials and results rather than long duty lists.
What skills should an accountant put on a resume?
Name the competencies employers screen for, such as full-cycle accounting, financial reporting under ASPE or IFRS, accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations, month-end and year-end close, payroll, and tax preparation, along with software like QuickBooks, Sage, SAP, and advanced Excel. Pair these with your CPA status.
What is a good objective for an accountant resume?
Keep it to one or two lines stating your CPA status, your reporting and software strengths, and the role you want. For example: CPA candidate skilled in full-cycle accounting, ASPE reporting, and QuickBooks, seeking a staff accountant role where accuracy and faster month-end closes add value. Lead with credentials and a measurable strength.
