How to write a bookkeeper resume in Canada
Bookkeeping in Canada has a specific shape, and employers check for it fast. Small businesses, property managers and accounting firms want someone who can reconcile the bank, keep payables and receivables current, and file GST/HST returns without being chased. If you have done those things in Canada, lead with them. If your experience is from another country, show the same work and add the Canadian pieces you have learned, such as sales tax and payroll source deductions.
Software is the quickest filter. QuickBooks Online, Xero and Sage 50 are the most common in Canadian small businesses, and many postings name one of them. List the ones you use and for how long, and mention add-ons such as Dext, Hubdoc or a payroll service like Wagepoint or ADP. If you are a QuickBooks ProAdvisor or Xero certified, put it near the top.
Numbers belong in every bullet: how many clients or companies, how many transactions a month, how many days it took to close, how much you recovered or saved. Designations help too. The Certified Professional Bookkeeper (CPB) designation and the National Payroll Institute's Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) are both recognized in Canada, and so is progress toward a CPA if you are working on one.
The layout rules that apply to every job are in our Canadian resume format guide. If you would rather start from a blank page that already follows them, use a free Canadian resume template.

Work experience bullet examples
Each one starts with what you did and ends with a result. Keep the shape and put your own numbers in.
- Kept the books for 12 small business clients, closing every month within 7 business days
- Reconciled 9 bank and credit card accounts monthly, clearing a backlog of 400 unmatched transactions in 6 weeks
- Filed quarterly GST/HST returns for 12 clients on time for 3 years, with no penalties or interest charged

Certifications and licences that help
Write each one out in full with the issuing body and the date. An employer should never have to guess what an acronym means or whether it has expired.
- Certified Professional Bookkeeper (CPB): The designation from CPB Canada. List it even if you are part way through, with the level you have reached.
- Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP): From the National Payroll Institute. A strong plus for any role that includes payroll.
- QuickBooks ProAdvisor or Xero Advisor: Free vendor certifications that prove you know the software many Canadian postings name.
- Accounting or bookkeeping certificate: A college certificate or diploma, with the year. If you trained abroad, add your credential assessment.
What recruiters wish you knew
Put the Canadian filings in writing
GST/HST returns, CRA payroll remittances, T4s and ROEs are the tasks that separate a Canadian bookkeeper from a general accounting clerk. If you do them, name them.
Show the size of the books
Twelve clients or one company, 50 transactions a month or 5,000, one bank account or nine: the scale tells an employer what you can take on.
Give your close time
How quickly and cleanly you close the month is the best single measure of a bookkeeper. If you shortened it, that is your strongest bullet.
The section order for a bookkeeper resume
Top to bottom, in the order a hiring manager in this field wants to read it.
- Contact details. City, phone, email and a LinkedIn link if yours is up to date.
- Professional summary. Your role, years of experience and the area or software you know best.
- Skills and software. Programs and systems by name, plus the languages you work in.
- Work experience. Volume and accuracy numbers in every role.
- Education and designations. Diploma or degree, and designations such as CPA.
- Certifications. MOS, QuickBooks or other courses, with the year.
What recruiters check first
The software you use every day (Excel, Outlook, QuickBooks), accuracy, and the volume you handled. Where to put it: Skills, then numbers in your bullets.
Common mistakes on bookkeeper resumes
These come up again and again, and each one is quick to fix.
Listing tasks with no scale
"Did bank reconciliations" leaves a reader guessing. Say how many clients or accounts, how many transactions a month and how long your month-end close takes.
Stretching the title
CPA is a protected designation in Canada, and a resume that blurs bookkeeping and accounting makes a careful reader wonder what else is stretched. Use bookkeeper or accounting clerk, and let the work show your level.
Leaving out the deadlines you met
Bookkeeping runs on dates. GST/HST returns, payroll remittances and T4s filed on time with no penalties are results, so write them down.
Before you send it
Six quick checks. Each takes less than a minute.
- The job title in your summary matches the one in the posting.
- Every certification is written out in full, with the issuing body and the expiry date.
- At least half of your bullets include a number.
- There is no photo, date of birth, marital status or SIN.
- It is saved as a PDF, unless the posting asks for a Word file.
- You ran it through the free resume check and fixed what it found.
Bookkeeper resume FAQ
What should a bookkeeper resume include in Canada?
The accounting software you use, the Canadian filings you handle (GST/HST, payroll remittances, T4s), the size of the books you keep and how fast you close the month. Add designations like CPB or PCP near the top.
What skills should a bookkeeper put on a resume?
Bank reconciliation, accounts payable and receivable, sales tax returns, payroll and source deductions, month-end close, year-end slips and Excel. Name your software: QuickBooks Online, Xero or Sage 50. Accuracy, confidentiality and meeting deadlines are the soft skills to back up.
Do I need a certification to work as a bookkeeper in Canada?
No. Bookkeeping is not a regulated profession in Canada, so you can work without a designation. That said, a CPB, a PCP for payroll or a ProAdvisor certificate helps you stand out and can raise what you are able to charge as a freelancer.
How do I write a bookkeeper resume with foreign experience?
Describe the work in plain terms that match Canadian postings: reconciliations, payables, receivables, tax filings, payroll. Then add the Canadian knowledge you have picked up, such as GST/HST or CRA remittances, through a course or practice. A credential assessment for your accounting education helps if the employer asks.
What is the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant resume?
A bookkeeper resume focuses on day-to-day records, reconciliations, payroll and filings. An accountant resume leans on analysis, financial statements, tax planning and a CPA designation. If you are a bookkeeper studying toward a CPA, say so in your summary.
Should a freelance bookkeeper list every client?
No. Group them into one entry, such as Self-employed Bookkeeper, with the number of clients, their industries and the services you provide. Name a client only if they are happy to be a reference.
