How to write a cashier resume in Canada
Cashier jobs in Canada are open to almost anyone, which is exactly why a manager at a grocery store, a big box retailer or a fast food counter can get fifty applications for one opening. They read each resume for a few seconds, looking for three things: that you can handle money without mistakes, that you stay friendly when the line is ten people deep, and that you can work the shifts they need to fill.
Numbers do the convincing. If your drawer balanced every shift, say so and say for how long. If you know how many customers you put through in an hour, use it. Name the till systems you have used, whether that is a Moneris terminal, Square, Shopify POS or a grocery system with a scale and PLU codes, because stores like hiring people who need less training.
Availability matters more for cashiers than for most jobs. Put the days and hours you can work in your summary, especially evenings, weekends and holidays. If you have sold alcohol, lottery tickets or tobacco, mention how you handled ID checks, since stores are fined for underage sales and managers want cashiers who take that seriously.
The layout rules that apply to every job are in our Canadian resume format guide. If you would rather start from a blank page that already follows them, use a free Canadian resume template.
Cashier professional summary examples
Your summary is the first thing a recruiter reads. Pick the one closest to your own background and change every detail so it describes you.
- Cashier with 3 years at a busy grocery store, with a drawer that balanced to the cent on 98% of shifts and a pace of 40+ customers an hour at peak. Comfortable with scales, PLU codes, coupons, returns and ID checks for age-restricted sales. Available evenings, weekends and holidays in Winnipeg.
- Friendly, quick cashier with 2 years in fast food and convenience retail. Handles cash, debit and tap payments accurately, keeps the line moving during lunch rushes and keeps the counter stocked and clean. Trained on Square and Moneris terminals. Looking for a part-time cashier role in Surrey.
- Reliable entry-level cashier looking for a first job. Good with numbers and comfortable talking with people, with cash handling practice from school fundraisers and a weekend market stall. Learns new systems quickly and shows up on time. Available after school, weekends and summer in Halifax.
Skills to put on a cashier resume
List the hard skills first, because they are what screening software and hiring managers search for. Keep soft skills to the ones a bullet point further down can back up.

- POS systems (Square, Shopify POS, Moneris)

- Scanning, scales and PLU codes
- Returns, exchanges and refunds

- cashier
- cash handling
- POS
- customer service
- front end
- retail
- grocery
- balancing cash
Work experience bullet examples
Each one starts with what you did and ends with a result. Keep the shape and put your own numbers in.
- Balanced a cash drawer of up to $3,000 per shift with zero shortages over 14 months
- Served 40+ customers an hour during weekend peaks while keeping the line under five minutes
- Signed up 120 customers for the store loyalty program in one quarter, the most on the front end
- Checked ID on every age-restricted sale and passed all 4 mystery shopper compliance visits
- Processed returns and exchanges by the book, cutting manager overrides at the till by about half
- Trained 5 new cashiers on the till, cash-out and gift card procedures
- Restocked impulse racks and faced shelves between customers, keeping the front end ready for inspections
Certifications and licences that help
Write each one out in full with the issuing body and the date. An employer should never have to guess what an acronym means or whether it has expired.
- Food Handler Certificate: Needed for cashiers who also serve or handle food, such as at coffee shops, fast food counters and grocery delis.
- Smart Serve (Ontario): Ontario stores that sell beer, wine or cider usually require it for anyone ringing in alcohol.
- Standard First Aid and CPR: Not required, but a plus for stores with small teams or long evening shifts.
- WHMIS: Useful if the job includes stocking cleaning products or working in a hardware or garden centre.
What recruiters wish you knew
Give your drawer a number
"Handled cash" tells a manager nothing. "Balanced the drawer on every shift for a year" or "zero shortages over 14 months" tells them you can be trusted with the till on day one.
Put your availability up front
Stores build schedules around evenings, weekends and holidays. Say which of those you can cover in your summary, not on the last line or only in the interview.
Name the systems you know
Square, Shopify POS, Moneris, a grocery scale with PLU codes: each one you have used is training the store does not have to do. List them in your skills section.
The section order for a cashier resume
Top to bottom, in the order a hiring manager in this field wants to read it.
- Contact details. City, phone and email.
- Professional summary. Your role, years of experience and your best number.
- Work experience. Sales, satisfaction or volume figures in each role.
- Skills and tools. POS, CRM and ticketing tools, and the languages you speak.
- Education. The highest level you completed.
- Certifications. Only training that relates to the job, with the year.
What recruiters check first
Numbers: sales against target, customers served per shift, satisfaction scores. Where to put it: Experience bullets.
Common mistakes on cashier resumes
These come up again and again, and each one is quick to fix.
Writing "handled cash" and nothing else
Every cashier handles cash. Say how big the drawer was, how often it balanced and how many customers you served at peak. A manager reads those numbers as trust.
Hiding your availability
Cashier hiring often comes down to who can cover the shifts. Put the days and hours you can work near the top, and say so if you can take holidays.
Leaving out the till work you already know
Scales, PLU codes, coupons, gift cards, returns and self-checkout support all cut training time. Name the POS system too if you know it, such as Square or Lightspeed.
Before you send it
Six quick checks. Each takes less than a minute.
- The job title in your summary matches the one in the posting.
- Every certification is written out in full, with the issuing body and the expiry date.
- At least half of your bullets include a number.
- There is no photo, date of birth, marital status or SIN.
- It is saved as a PDF, unless the posting asks for a Word file.
- You ran it through the free resume check and fixed what it found.
Cashier resume FAQ
What should I put on a cashier resume with no experience?
Lead with a short summary about your reliability, your comfort with numbers and the hours you can work. Then add anything where you handled money or served people: school fundraisers, a market stall, volunteering at a food bank or helping at a family business. A skills list with cash handling, customer service and any till system you have tried fills out the page.
What skills should a cashier put on a resume?
Cash handling and drawer balancing, the POS systems you have used, debit and tap payments, returns and exchanges, scanning and scale items, and ID checks for age-restricted sales. For soft skills, pick friendliness, accuracy, patience and speed under pressure, and back each one up with a bullet.
How do I describe cashier duties on a resume?
Turn duties into results. Instead of "responsible for the cash register", write "Balanced a $3,000 drawer with zero shortages over 14 months". Add the pace you worked at, programs you signed customers up for and anything a manager trusted you with, such as opening, closing or training new staff.
Should a cashier resume be one page?
Yes. One page is right for almost every cashier resume, including ones with several jobs. Keep the most recent and most relevant roles, and cut older jobs down to a line each if you need the space.
Do I need a certificate to be a cashier in Canada?
Usually not. Most stores train cashiers on the job. A Food Handler certificate helps for food counters, and in Ontario, stores that sell beer and wine usually ask cashiers to complete Smart Serve. List any of these near the top if you have them.
What is a good objective for a cashier resume?
One or two lines that say what you bring and when you can work. For example: Friendly, accurate cashier with two years of grocery experience and a perfect cash-out record, looking for part-time evening and weekend shifts.
