How to write an early childhood educator resume in Canada
Early childhood educators are in demand across Canada as the national $10-a-day child care plan adds spaces, and centre directors read a lot of resumes. The first thing they check is whether you can legally count in ratio. In Ontario that means registration with the College of Early Childhood Educators (RECE). In British Columbia it means a certificate from the ECE Registry, such as ECE, ECE Assistant, Infant and Toddler Educator or Special Needs Educator. Other provinces have their own levels. Put yours, with the registration number or level, right under your name or in your summary.
After that, directors look for the age groups you have worked with (infant, toddler, preschool or school-age), the size of your group and how you plan. Name the framework you use, such as How Does Learning Happen? in Ontario or the BC Early Learning Framework, and show the parts of the job they cannot see from a certificate: documentation, observations, emergent or play-based curriculum, and how you talk with families.
Every centre also needs the basics to be current: Standard First Aid with CPR Level C, a vulnerable sector check, and up-to-date immunizations. List them with dates. If you trained outside Canada, say that your credentials have been assessed by the provincial body, or that you are working through that process, because directors need to know when you can be counted in ratio.

Work experience bullet examples
Each one starts with what you did and ends with a result. Keep the shape and put your own numbers in.
- Led a preschool room of 16 children with a co-educator, planning weekly emergent programs from the children's own interests
- Wrote daily observations and learning stories for every child in HiMama, keeping all 24 families updated
- Introduced a loose parts outdoor area that doubled the time children spent in self-directed play

- Held 20-minute family check-ins each term that parents rated 4.8 out of 5 in the centre survey
Certifications and licences that help
Write each one out in full with the issuing body and the date. An employer should never have to guess what an acronym means or whether it has expired.
- RECE or provincial ECE certificate: Your registration with the College of Early Childhood Educators in Ontario, the BC ECE Registry, or your province's equivalent. Include the number or level.
- Standard First Aid with CPR Level C: Required in licensed child care. Give the expiry date, and renew before it lapses.
- Vulnerable sector check: Every centre asks for one. Say that yours is current, or that you can provide one quickly.
- Early Childhood Education diploma: The two-year college diploma, or your assessed equivalent from another country, with the school and year.
What recruiters wish you knew
Say whether you count in ratio
Directors plan staffing around who can be counted. Your RECE number or ECE certificate level answers that in one line, so put it at the top.
Show how you plan, not just what you did
"Planned activities" is on every ECE resume. Describe how you turn observations into programming, and name the framework you work from.
Include the families
Centres keep enrolment by keeping families happy. A bullet about communication, family events or a parent survey shows you understand that side of the job.
The section order for an early childhood educator resume
Top to bottom, in the order a hiring manager in this field wants to read it.
- Contact details. City, phone and email.
- Professional summary. Your certification, divisions or subjects, and years in the classroom.
- Certification. Your provincial college membership and qualifications.
- Teaching experience. School, grade, subject and dates for each role, including occasional work.
- Education. Your B.Ed. and your first degree.
- Additional qualifications and skills. AQs, languages, coaching and clubs.
What recruiters check first
Teaching certification, ECE registration or an EA certificate, and the grades or ages you have worked with. Where to put it: Certification, then classroom experience.
Common mistakes on early childhood educator resumes
These come up again and again, and each one is quick to fix.
Describing the day instead of the learning
"Supervised children and did crafts" misses what you actually do. Show how you plan from children's interests, document their learning and use your province's framework, such as How Does Learning Happen? in Ontario.
Leaving families out
Centres hire educators who build trust with parents. Mention how you share daily updates, run check-ins or help a family through a hard transition.
Making the director hunt for your registration
A director needs to know you count in ratio before anything else. Write your registration or certificate level in full near the top, and keep First Aid and your vulnerable sector check current.
Before you send it
Six quick checks. Each takes less than a minute.
- The job title in your summary matches the one in the posting.
- Every certification is written out in full, with the issuing body and the expiry date.
- At least half of your bullets include a number.
- There is no photo, date of birth, marital status or SIN.
- It is saved as a PDF, unless the posting asks for a Word file.
- You ran it through the free resume check and fixed what it found.
Early Childhood Educator resume FAQ
What should an early childhood educator resume include in Canada?
Your ECE registration or certificate, the age groups you have worked with, how you plan and document learning, and your current First Aid, CPR C and vulnerable sector check. Add practicum placements if you are a new graduate, and any languages the families you work with speak.
Do I need to be registered to work as an ECE in Canada?
In most provinces, yes, if you want to work as an early childhood educator in a licensed centre. Ontario requires registration with the College of Early Childhood Educators, and British Columbia requires a certificate from the ECE Registry. Unregistered staff can often work as assistants. Check your province's rules and list your status clearly.
What skills should an early childhood educator put on a resume?
Play-based and emergent curriculum, observation and documentation, child development, behaviour guidance, licensing and ratio standards, and family communication. For soft skills, pick patience, creativity, warmth and teamwork, and show each one in a bullet.
How do I write an ECE resume as a new graduate?
Put your diploma and registration status at the top, then give each practicum placement its own entry with the age group, the centre and what you planned. Babysitting, camp counselling and volunteer work with children add to it.
Can I work as an ECE in Canada with a foreign credential?
Often, yes, once the provincial body assesses your education. In Ontario that is the College of Early Childhood Educators, and in BC the ECE Registry. While you wait, you can usually work as an assistant. Say on your resume that your assessment is complete or in progress.
What is a good objective for an early childhood educator resume?
One or two lines on your registration, age group and approach. For example: Registered Early Childhood Educator with four years in toddler rooms, looking to lead a play-based program in a licensed centre in Ottawa.
