How to write a carpenter resume in Canada
Carpentry covers very different work, and your resume should say which kind you do. A residential framer, a commercial formwork carpenter, a finish carpenter installing trim and cabinets, and a renovation carpenter all bring different skills. Say which you are in the first line, along with your certificate: the Red Seal, or your province's certificate, such as the 403A General Carpenter in Ontario, or your apprenticeship level.
Projects make a carpenter's resume. Give the type and scale of what you have built: custom homes, townhouse blocks, mid-rise concrete forming, schools, or kitchens and basements. Numbers help, such as square footage, number of units or the size of the crew you led. Mention reading blueprints, layout with laser levels and total stations, and the systems you know, like engineered floor joists or gang forms.
Safety tickets and equipment round it out. Ontario sites need Working at Heights, and Alberta and BC sites often ask for CSTS 2020 and fall protection. If you are certified on elevating work platforms, powder-actuated tools or a telehandler, list them. Contractors also like to see a clean driver's licence, a full set of tools and a record of finishing on schedule.

Carpenter professional summary examples
Your summary is the first thing a recruiter reads. Pick the one closest to your own background and change every detail so it describes you.
- Red Seal carpenter with 10 years in residential and light commercial construction in the Greater Toronto Area, including 5 years as a lead framing carpenter running a crew of 6. Builds custom homes and townhouse blocks from plans, with strong layout, stair and roof framing skills. Working at Heights and WHMIS current.
- Commercial formwork carpenter with 6 years on mid-rise and institutional concrete projects in Vancouver. Experienced with gang forms, column and slab forming, and layout with a total station. CSTS 2020, fall protection and EWP certified. Looking for a foreman-track role.
- Second-year carpentry apprentice with 2 years on a renovation crew in Halifax, doing framing, drywall, doors, trim and decks. Completed first-level technical training at NSCC, owns a full set of hand and power tools and is looking for a sponsor to finish the apprenticeship.
Skills to put on a carpenter resume
List the hard skills first, because they are what screening software and hiring managers search for. Keep soft skills to the ones a bullet point further down can back up.

- Wood framing (walls, floors, roofs, stairs)
- Concrete formwork
- Blueprint reading and layout
- Laser levels and total stations
- Finish carpentry, trim and doors
- Cabinet and millwork installation
- Engineered joists and trusses
- Powder-actuated and pneumatic tools

Soft skills
- Precision

- Communication with other trades
Words to mirror from the job posting
Employers and their screening software look for the words they used in the ad. When one of these appears in a posting and it is true for you, use the same wording on your resume.

- formwork

Work experience bullet examples
Each one starts with what you did and ends with a result. Keep the shape and put your own numbers in.
- Framed 40+ custom homes and townhouse units from plans, with every job passing framing inspection the first time
- Led a 6-person framing crew and finished a 24-unit townhouse block 2 weeks ahead of schedule
- Formed columns, walls and slabs on a 12-storey concrete building, using gang forms and total station layout
- Built and installed custom stairs, trim and built-ins for high-end renovations with no warranty callbacks
- Completed material takeoffs that cut framing lumber waste by about 10% on repeat house plans
- Kept a spotless safety record for 5 years on concrete sites, including leading daily tailgate talks
- Trained 3 apprentices in layout, cutting and framing techniques
Certifications and licences that help
Write each one out in full with the issuing body and the date. An employer should never have to guess what an acronym means or whether it has expired.
- Red Seal Carpenter: The interprovincial standard. List it with your provincial certificate, such as the 403A in Ontario.
- Working at Heights (Ontario): Required for Ontario construction work where there is a fall hazard. Refresh every three years.
- CSTS 2020 and fall protection: Common requirements on Alberta and BC construction sites.
- Elevating work platform (EWP): Scissor lift and boom lift certification, useful on commercial jobs.
What recruiters wish you knew
Say what kind of carpenter you are
Framing, formwork, finishing and renovation are different jobs. Name yours in the first line so a contractor knows you fit before reading further.
List projects, not just duties
Every carpenter "reads blueprints". Give the building type, the size, your role and the result, like a townhouse block finished two weeks early.
Show you can lead
If you have run a crew, trained apprentices or handled layout for other trades, say so. It shows you are ready for lead hand or foreman work.
The section order for a carpenter resume
Top to bottom, in the order a hiring manager in this field wants to read it.
- Contact details. City, phone and email, plus your driver's licence class if the job involves driving.
- Professional summary. Your trade, years on the job and your most useful ticket.
- Licences and tickets. Trade certificate, Red Seal, WHMIS, Working at Heights or forklift, each with a date.
- Work experience. Employer, the type and size of the work, and your safety record.
- Skills and equipment. Tools, machines and processes you can run without supervision.
- Education and training. Apprenticeship level or hours, trade school and safety courses.
What recruiters check first
Your trade ticket or Red Seal, WHMIS and Working at Heights, and the equipment you can run. Where to put it: A licences and tickets section near the top.
Common mistakes on carpenter resumes
These come up again and again, and each one is quick to fix.
Not saying what kind of carpentry
Framing, formwork, finish and renovation are different jobs. Say which you do, on what kind of building, so a foreman can match you to the right crew.
Leaving out the size of the work
Give the number of homes, units or storeys, and your role on the crew. "Framed 40 custom homes" is easier to believe than "extensive framing experience".
Forgetting layout and plan reading
Reading drawings and laying out from plans with a laser or total station is what separates a lead hand from a helper. If you can do it, say so plainly.
Before you send it
Six quick checks. Each takes less than a minute.
- The job title in your summary matches the one in the posting.
- Every certification is written out in full, with the issuing body and the expiry date.
- At least half of your bullets include a number.
- There is no photo, date of birth, marital status or SIN.
- It is saved as a PDF, unless the posting asks for a Word file.
- You ran it through the free resume check and fixed what it found.
Carpenter resume FAQ
What should a carpenter resume include in Canada?
Your type of carpentry, your Red Seal or provincial certificate (or apprenticeship level), the projects you have worked on and their scale, the tools and systems you know, and your safety tickets with dates.
What skills should a carpenter put on a resume?
Framing, formwork, finishing, blueprint reading, layout with laser levels or total stations, estimating and the equipment you are certified on. For soft skills, choose precision, problem solving, crew leadership and safety awareness.
How do I write a carpenter resume as an apprentice?
List your apprenticeship level, hours and technical training, then describe the work you do on site with examples. Say what tools you own and what you want to learn next. Contractors hiring apprentices look for reliability and attitude.
Do carpenters need a licence in Canada?
In most provinces carpentry is a voluntary trade, so you can work without a certificate, but a Red Seal or provincial certificate shows your level and often raises your pay. Quebec has its own system through the CCQ. Check your province's rules.
Should I include a portfolio on my carpenter resume?
For finish carpentry, renovations and custom work, a link to a few photos can help a lot. Add it next to your contact details. For framing or formwork, a clear list of projects usually works better.
What is a good objective for a carpenter resume?
One or two lines on your type of work and your certificate. For example: Red Seal framing carpenter with eight years in custom homes, looking for a lead hand role with a residential builder in Ottawa.
