How to write a construction worker resume in Canada
On a Canadian construction resume, safety tickets are not a footnote. They are often the first thing a foreman or site supervisor looks for. WHMIS 2015 and, in Ontario, a valid Working at Heights certificate can be the difference between getting a call back and being filtered out, so they belong near the top of the page.
After certifications, employers want to know what you can actually do on site and which tools and trades you have worked with. List concrete skills such as framing, formwork, concrete finishing, blueprint reading, and demolition. Name the equipment you operate and the types of projects you have worked on, whether residential, commercial, or industrial.
Physical reliability and a clean safety record carry weight. Mention years on the tools, your ability to work in all weather, and any incident-free streaks. Quantify wherever you can: square footage, crew size, project value, or units completed.
The layout rules that apply to every job are in our Canadian resume format guide. If you would rather start from a blank page that already follows them, use a free Canadian resume template.

Work experience bullet examples
Each one starts with what you did and ends with a result. Keep the shape and put your own numbers in.
- Framed and sheathed 20+ residential units while maintaining a zero-incident safety record over two years
- Set and stripped concrete forms for a 12-storey commercial build, meeting every pour schedule
- Read drawings and laid out partitions for a 40,000 sq ft retail fit-out with no rework
- Operated power tools and a skid steer to clear and grade three job sites per week
- Tied rebar for foundation footings across a $4M residential subdivision
- Loaded, staged, and tracked materials for a 15-person crew, keeping daily downtime under 10 minutes
Certifications and licences that help
Write each one out in full with the issuing body and the date. An employer should never have to guess what an acronym means or whether it has expired.
- WHMIS 2015: Standard workplace hazardous materials training expected on nearly every Canadian site.
- Working at Heights: Required in Ontario for work on most elevated surfaces. List the provider and expiry.
- CSO / Fall Protection: Construction safety and fall-arrest training valued across provinces.
- Red Seal (if applicable): Interprovincial trade certification that signals journeyperson skill.
What recruiters wish you knew
Put safety tickets near the top
List WHMIS, Working at Heights, and fall protection with issue and expiry dates in a dedicated Certifications section high on the page. Site supervisors scan for these first.
Name the trades, tools, and project types
Be specific about whether you worked residential, commercial, or industrial, and which tools and equipment you operate. Generic "construction work" tells a foreman nothing.
Quantify the scale of your work
Use square footage, storey counts, crew sizes, and project values. Numbers prove you have worked at the level the employer needs.
The section order for a construction worker resume
Top to bottom, in the order a hiring manager in this field wants to read it.
- Contact details. City, phone and email, plus your driver's licence class if the job involves driving.
- Professional summary. Your trade, years on the job and your most useful ticket.
- Licences and tickets. Trade certificate, Red Seal, WHMIS, Working at Heights or forklift, each with a date.
- Work experience. Employer, the type and size of the work, and your safety record.
- Skills and equipment. Tools, machines and processes you can run without supervision.
- Education and training. Apprenticeship level or hours, trade school and safety courses.
What recruiters check first
Your trade ticket or Red Seal, WHMIS and Working at Heights, and the equipment you can run. Where to put it: A licences and tickets section near the top.
Common mistakes on construction worker resumes
These come up again and again, and each one is quick to fix.
Writing "general labour" and nothing else
Every applicant for the posting did general labour. Say what kind: framing, forming, demolition, drywall, site cleanup. The specific tasks are what match you to the crew that is hiring.
Leaving out your driver's licence and tools
Site work often starts early and far from transit. A line saying you hold a G licence, have your own vehicle and carry your own hand tools answers questions a foreman would otherwise ask on the phone.
Stretching dates to cover slow seasons
Winter slowdowns are normal in construction and most hiring managers know it. List each contract with its months and leave the gaps as they are. Stretched dates tend to come apart at the reference check.
Before you send it
Six quick checks. Each takes less than a minute.
- The job title in your summary matches the one in the posting.
- Every certification is written out in full, with the issuing body and the expiry date.
- At least half of your bullets include a number.
- There is no photo, date of birth, marital status or SIN.
- It is saved as a PDF, unless the posting asks for a Word file.
- You ran it through the free resume check and fixed what it found.
Construction Worker resume FAQ
What certifications do I need on a Canadian construction resume?
WHMIS 2015 is expected on almost every site. In Ontario, Working at Heights is required for most elevated work. Fall protection, first aid, and a Red Seal where applicable are strong additions. List each with the issuing provider and expiry date.
How do I write a construction resume with no formal trade certificate?
Lead with safety tickets like WHMIS, then focus on hands-on skills, tools you operate, and project types. Quantify your work with crew sizes, square footage, and incident-free time. Reliability and a clean safety record matter a great deal for labourer roles.
Should I list every job site I have worked on?
No. Group your experience by employer or contractor and highlight the most relevant and recent projects. Use bullet points that show scope and results rather than a long list of every short-term site.
How long should a construction worker resume be in Canada?
One to two pages. Trades workers with many tickets and years of varied site work can use two pages, but keep formatting simple and single-column so applicant tracking systems can read every certification and skill.
What skills should I put on a construction resume?
List the hands-on skills foremen screen for, such as framing and rough carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, blueprint reading, rebar tying, power and hand tool operation, and material handling, along with safety tickets like WHMIS and Working at Heights. Add dependable soft skills such as punctuality, physical stamina, and safety awareness.
What is a good objective for a construction labourer resume?
Use one or two lines that lead with your safety tickets, your physical reliability, and the type of site work you want. For example: WHMIS and Working at Heights certified labourer seeking full-time residential site work, offering a clean safety record, strong stamina, and framing and concrete experience. Pairing certifications with availability makes an entry-level application stand out.
