How to write a forklift operator resume in Canada
Forklift operator jobs are some of the steadiest in Canadian warehouses, distribution centres, plants and lumber yards, and managers hire fast when a resume answers their questions quickly. The first question is which equipment you are certified on. There is no government forklift licence in Canada. Instead, employers and training schools certify operators on specific classes of equipment, usually following the CSA B335 standard, and re-evaluate operators at least every three years.
So be specific. Name each type of lift: counterbalance (sit-down, propane or electric), reach truck, order picker, pallet jack, walkie stacker, or rough terrain forklift for yards and sites. Give the date of your last evaluation. If your certificate is from a previous employer, say so. Most new employers will do their own evaluation, but it helps them know you will pass.
Then show the work. Put numbers on your productivity, such as pallets moved, picks per hour, trucks loaded or accuracy on cycle counts. Name the warehouse management system and RF scanners you have used. A clean safety record, with no incidents or product damage over a long stretch, is one of the strongest lines you can write.

Work experience bullet examples
Each one starts with what you did and ends with a result. Keep the shape and put your own numbers in.
- Loaded and unloaded 15+ trailers a shift on counterbalance and reach trucks, beating the dock target by 12%
- Put away and replenished 250+ pallets a shift with 99.8% scan accuracy in Manhattan WMS
- Ran 4 years with zero incidents, zero product damage claims and every pre-use inspection logged
- Completed weekly cycle counts that helped raise inventory accuracy from 96% to 99.5%
- Worked full shifts in freezer conditions down to -25°C, handling frozen and fragile loads
- Trained 6 new operators on dock safety, stacking and the pre-use checklist
- Flagged 3 damaged racking sections during daily walks, which were repaired before any collapse
Certifications and licences that help
Write each one out in full with the issuing body and the date. An employer should never have to guess what an acronym means or whether it has expired.
- Forklift operator certification (CSA B335): List each class you are certified on and the date of your last evaluation. Re-evaluation is due at least every three years.
- WHMIS: Required in almost every warehouse and plant, especially where propane or chemicals are stored.
- Standard First Aid and CPR: Often valued for lead hand and shift roles.
- Propane handling training: Useful for anyone who changes cylinders on propane forklifts. In Ontario it is covered by TSSA rules.
What recruiters wish you knew
Name every lift type
"Forklift certified" is too vague. Counterbalance, reach truck, order picker, walkie stacker: each one you name is equipment the employer does not have to train you on.
Give your safety record a number
Years without an incident, product damage or a racking strike is the line a warehouse manager wants to see. Put it in your summary.
Show speed and accuracy together
Pallets per shift or trailers per shift shows speed, and scan or count accuracy shows care. Operators who give both look like safe hires.
The section order for a forklift operator resume
Top to bottom, in the order a hiring manager in this field wants to read it.
- Contact details. City, phone and email, plus your driver's licence class if the job involves driving.
- Professional summary. Your trade, years on the job and your most useful ticket.
- Licences and tickets. Trade certificate, Red Seal, WHMIS, Working at Heights or forklift, each with a date.
- Work experience. Employer, the type and size of the work, and your safety record.
- Skills and equipment. Tools, machines and processes you can run without supervision.
- Education and training. Apprenticeship level or hours, trade school and safety courses.
What recruiters check first
Your trade ticket or Red Seal, WHMIS and Working at Heights, and the equipment you can run. Where to put it: A licences and tickets section near the top.
Common mistakes on forklift operator resumes
These come up again and again, and each one is quick to fix.
Saying "forklift certified" without the trucks
Training on a counterbalance does not cover a reach truck or an order picker. List each class of lift truck you are trained on, with the date of your last evaluation.
Leaving safety out of the numbers
Speed matters, but managers hire operators who do not break things. Put your incident record, damage claims and pre-use inspections beside your trailer counts.
Not naming the systems
RF scanners and warehouse systems like Manhattan, SAP or Blue Yonder each take time to learn. Name the ones you have used.
Before you send it
Six quick checks. Each takes less than a minute.
- The job title in your summary matches the one in the posting.
- Every certification is written out in full, with the issuing body and the expiry date.
- At least half of your bullets include a number.
- There is no photo, date of birth, marital status or SIN.
- It is saved as a PDF, unless the posting asks for a Word file.
- You ran it through the free resume check and fixed what it found.
Forklift Operator resume FAQ
Do you need a forklift licence in Canada?
There is no government forklift licence in Canada. Operators are trained and certified by employers or training schools on specific classes of equipment, usually to the CSA B335 standard, and are re-evaluated at least every three years. On your resume, call it forklift certification and list each lift type with the date.
What should a forklift operator resume include?
The lift types you are certified on and when, the kinds of warehouses or plants you have worked in, your productivity and accuracy numbers, the WMS and scanners you know, and your safety record. Add WHMIS and any First Aid training.
What skills should a forklift operator put on a resume?
Counterbalance and reach truck operation, loading and unloading, putaway and replenishment, RF scanning, cycle counts, pre-use inspections and shipping paperwork. For soft skills, choose safety awareness, focus, reliability and spatial awareness.
How do I get a forklift job with no experience?
Take a forklift certification course on the most common types, usually counterbalance and reach truck, and complete WHMIS. Then apply for warehouse associate roles where you can move onto a lift. Show any pallet jack, picking or shipping work you have done.
Should I list the warehouse management system I used?
Yes. Systems like Manhattan, SAP, Blue Yonder or an in-house WMS with RF scanners are what you will use every shift. Knowing one makes it easier to learn another, and employers screen for them.
What is a good objective for a forklift operator resume?
One or two lines with your lift types, safety record and preferred shift. For example: Counterbalance and reach truck certified operator with four incident-free years, looking for a night shift role in a distribution centre.
