How to write a bartender resume in Canada
Every province requires responsible alcohol service training for bartenders, so the first thing a manager looks for is your certificate: Smart Serve in Ontario, Serving It Right in British Columbia, ProServe in Alberta, or your province's program. Put it near the top. If you do not have it yet, get it before you apply. It is quick, done online and cheap, and many managers will not interview without it.
Then describe the bar. A high-volume sports bar, a craft cocktail lounge, a hotel bar and a banquet service all ask for different skills. Say what kind of places you have worked, how many covers or guests you served on a busy night, and what you are known for, whether that is speed, cocktails, wine knowledge or regulars who come back to see you.
Bars run on numbers, so use them. Sales per shift, upselling results, pour cost and inventory accuracy all show you understand the business side. If you have built a cocktail menu, trained staff or handled the bar on your own, include it. And mention how you handle the hard parts, like checking ID, cutting off guests and keeping things calm when a night gets rowdy, since that is part of what you are hired for.

Work experience bullet examples
Each one starts with what you did and ends with a result. Keep the shape and put your own numbers in.
- Served 300+ guests on busy Friday and Saturday nights at a high-volume Toronto bar, with ticket times under 5 minutes
- Created a seasonal cocktail menu that raised bar sales by 18% in its first quarter
- Kept pour cost under 20% by measuring pours and tracking weekly inventory against sales

- Calmly cut off intoxicated guests and arranged safe rides home, with no incidents in 4 years
- Trained 5 new bartenders on recipes, pour standards and responsible service
Certifications and licences that help
Write each one out in full with the issuing body and the date. An employer should never have to guess what an acronym means or whether it has expired.
- Smart Serve (Ontario): Required to serve alcohol in Ontario. Other provinces have their own: Serving It Right in BC, ProServe in Alberta.
- Food Handler Certificate: Useful for bartenders who help with food, and often required in restaurants.
- WSET Level 1 or 2: A wine and spirits course that helps at wine bars and upscale restaurants.
- Standard First Aid and CPR: Valued for late-night shifts and small teams.
What recruiters wish you knew
Name your certificate by province
Smart Serve, Serving It Right, ProServe: the name tells a manager you can legally pour in their province. Put it in your summary if you have it.
Use sales numbers
Bars are businesses. Sales per shift, upselling results and pour cost show you make the bar money, not just drinks.
Show your judgment
Checking ID, cutting off guests and calming tense moments protect the licence. A line that shows you handle those well is valuable to any manager.
The section order for a bartender resume
Top to bottom, in the order a hiring manager in this field wants to read it.
- Contact details. City, phone and email.
- Professional summary. Your role, the kind of place you worked and when you are available.
- Certifications. Food Handler, Smart Serve or Serving It Right, and WHMIS, with dates.
- Work experience. The type of venue, the volume and your results.
- Skills. Stations, equipment, POS systems and languages.
- Education. The highest level you completed, plus any culinary or hospitality program.
What recruiters check first
A Food Handler certificate, Smart Serve or Serving It Right where alcohol is served, and your availability. Where to put it: Certifications, plus availability in your summary.
Common mistakes on bartender resumes
These come up again and again, and each one is quick to fix.
Listing cocktails instead of results
Managers care whether your drinks sell. Give sales per shift, pour cost, ticket times or what happened after you built a menu.
Leaving out responsible service
A cut-off handled well protects the liquor licence. One line on ID checks, cut-offs and safe rides home shows you take that seriously.
Writing about the drinks, not the guests
Regulars, good reviews and a calm manner on a packed night are why bars keep good bartenders. Show how you look after people, not only what you pour.
Before you send it
Six quick checks. Each takes less than a minute.
- The job title in your summary matches the one in the posting.
- Every certification is written out in full, with the issuing body and the expiry date.
- At least half of your bullets include a number.
- There is no photo, date of birth, marital status or SIN.
- It is saved as a PDF, unless the posting asks for a Word file.
- You ran it through the free resume check and fixed what it found.
Bartender resume FAQ
What should a bartender resume include in Canada?
Your responsible service certificate for the province, the types of bars you have worked in, your volume on busy nights, your cocktail and product knowledge, and sales numbers like average sales per shift or upselling results.
Do I need Smart Serve to be a bartender?
In Ontario, yes. Anyone who serves alcohol must have Smart Serve. Other provinces have their own training, such as Serving It Right in BC and ProServe in Alberta. Complete it before you apply and list it near the top.
What skills should a bartender put on a resume?
Cocktails and product knowledge, responsible service and ID checks, POS and cash handling, inventory and pour cost, and upselling. For soft skills, choose speed under pressure, friendliness, judgment and calm in conflict.
How do I get a bartending job with no experience?
Start as a server, barback or host in a place with a busy bar, and ask to cover the service bar. Get your province's responsible service certificate, learn the classics, and show your customer service and cash handling on your resume.
Should a bartender resume be one page?
Yes, one page is right for almost every bartender. Focus on the most recent and relevant bars and use numbers to keep each bullet short and strong.
What is a good objective for a bartender resume?
One or two lines on your experience and style. For example: Smart Serve certified bartender with three years in busy sports bars, known for speed and strong upselling, looking to join a cocktail-focused team.
