How to write a server resume in Canada

Serving is fast, social, and revenue-driving, and Canadian restaurants hire for personality, speed, and reliability. A strong server resume proves you can deliver friendly service, manage a section during a rush, and increase the cheque through smart upselling. It is a great fit for students and newcomers, and the right resume gets you working quickly.

Provincial responsible-alcohol-service training is often required, so list your Smart Serve, ProServe, or Serving It Right certificate near the top. Name the service style you know, such as fine dining, casual, banquet, or bar, along with your POS experience, wine or menu knowledge, and the size of section you can handle.

Reliability and energy matter as much as polish. Highlight your availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays, any sales or guest-satisfaction results, and experience training or leading staff. Keep the layout simple and single-column so a manager can scan it in seconds.

The layout rules that apply to every job are in our Canadian resume format guide. If you would rather start from a blank page that already follows them, use a free Canadian resume template.

Server professional summary examples

Your summary is the first thing a recruiter reads. Pick the one closest to your own background and change every detail so it describes you.

Skills to put on a server resume

List the hard skills first, because they are what screening software and hiring managers search for. Keep soft skills to the ones a bullet point further down can back up.

Hard skills

Soft skills

Words to mirror from the job posting

Employers and their screening software look for the words they used in the ad. When one of these appears in a posting and it is true for you, use the same wording on your resume.

Work experience bullet examples

Each one starts with what you did and ends with a result. Keep the shape and put your own numbers in.

  1. Served sections of 6 to 8 tables during peak shifts while maintaining order accuracy
  2. Increased average cheque size through suggestive selling of appetizers and drinks
  3. Maintained strong guest-satisfaction scores across two consecutive seasons
  4. Handled cash and card payments with accurate end-of-shift reconciliation
  5. Supported banquet service for events of 150+ guests, keeping timing on schedule
  6. Trained two new servers on POS, steps of service, and upselling

Certifications and licences that help

Write each one out in full with the issuing body and the date. An employer should never have to guess what an acronym means or whether it has expired.

What recruiters wish you knew

Get your alcohol-service certificate

Smart Serve, ProServe, or Serving It Right is often required and quick to complete. Listing it near the top removes a barrier to getting hired.

Show service style and section size

Fine dining, casual, bar, and banquet differ. Stating your style and how many tables you handle tells a manager you can keep up.

Highlight upselling and availability

Servers who lift cheque size make the restaurant money, and evening and weekend availability is what managers need. Put both front and centre.

The section order for a server resume

Top to bottom, in the order a hiring manager in this field wants to read it.

  1. Contact details. City, phone and email.
  2. Professional summary. Your role, the kind of place you worked and when you are available.
  3. Certifications. Food Handler, Smart Serve or Serving It Right, and WHMIS, with dates.
  4. Work experience. The type of venue, the volume and your results.
  5. Skills. Stations, equipment, POS systems and languages.
  6. Education. The highest level you completed, plus any culinary or hospitality program.

What recruiters check first

A Food Handler certificate, Smart Serve or Serving It Right where alcohol is served, and your availability. Where to put it: Certifications, plus availability in your summary.

Common mistakes on server resumes

These come up again and again, and each one is quick to fix.

Writing only "served customers"

Say what kind of service: fine dining with wine pairings, a packed patio, banquets, a sports bar on game night. Each one tells a manager how fast and how formally you work.

Leaving out wine and menu knowledge

If you know a wine list well, can talk guests through allergens, or have taken a WSET course, add it. It supports bigger cheques and managers look for it.

Not naming the POS systems you know

Name the ones you have used, such as Toast, Lightspeed, Squirrel or TouchBistro. It tells a manager you will need less training on your first shift.

Before you send it

Six quick checks. Each takes less than a minute.

Server resume FAQ

Do I need a certificate to serve in Canada?

In most provinces you need responsible-alcohol-service training to serve alcohol, such as Smart Serve in Ontario, ProServe in Alberta, or Serving It Right in BC. It is quick to complete and should be listed near the top of your resume.

How do I write a server resume with no experience?

Emphasize friendliness, speed, reliability, and any role where you served or helped people, including retail, hosting, or volunteering. Complete your provincial alcohol-service certificate and state your evening and weekend availability.

What should a server resume highlight?

Service style, section size, POS and upselling skills, menu or wine knowledge, and any sales or guest-satisfaction results. Reliability and availability for busy shifts are strong selling points.

How long should a server resume be?

One page. Keep it simple and single-column with clear sections for certifications, skills, and experience so a busy manager can read it quickly.

What skills should a server put on a resume?

List the service skills managers screen for, such as table and section service, POS operation, order accuracy, upselling and suggestive selling, menu and wine knowledge, cash handling, and responsible alcohol service, along with friendliness, speed under pressure, and reliability. Note your section size and service style.

What is a good objective for a server resume?

Keep it to one or two lines noting your alcohol-service certificate, a service or sales strength, and your availability. For example: Friendly server with a valid Smart Serve certificate, skilled in POS, upselling, and fast table service, seeking an evening and weekend role in a busy restaurant. A certificate plus availability gets you hired quickly.
