How to write a barista resume in Canada
Barista jobs are one of the most common first jobs in Canada, and one of the most competitive at busy chains and independent cafés. A manager reading your resume wants to know three things: can you keep up during the morning rush, will customers like you, and when can you work? Answer those in your summary, and include the early mornings and weekends you are free, because those are the shifts that are hardest to fill.
Specialty cafés care about coffee skill. If you can dial in espresso, steam milk for latte art, or know brew methods like pour-over and batch brew, say so. At high-volume chains, speed and consistency matter more: drinks per hour, drive-through times and accuracy on mobile orders. Either way, numbers help. A barista who says they made 80 drinks an hour at peak is easier to picture behind the bar.
Food safety training is a quick way to stand out. Many provinces or health units require at least one certified food handler on each shift, and managers like hiring people who already have it: a Food Handler certificate in Ontario, FOODSAFE Level 1 in British Columbia, or your province's equivalent. If you have taken a coffee course, like an SCA module, list it too.

Barista professional summary examples
Your summary is the first thing a recruiter reads. Pick the one closest to your own background and change every detail so it describes you.
- Barista with 3 years at a busy specialty café in Montreal, skilled in dialing in espresso, milk texturing and latte art, and making 80+ drinks an hour during the morning rush. Trains new staff on the bar, handles opening and cash-out, and serves customers warmly in English and French.
- Fast, friendly barista with 2 years at a high-volume coffee chain in Toronto, keeping drive-through times under 60 seconds and getting mobile orders right during peak hours. Food Handler certified, reliable for 5:30 a.m. opens and weekend shifts.

Skills to put on a barista resume
List the hard skills first, because they are what screening software and hiring managers search for. Keep soft skills to the ones a bullet point further down can back up.

Work experience bullet examples
Each one starts with what you did and ends with a result. Keep the shape and put your own numbers in.
- Made 80+ drinks an hour during weekday morning rushes while keeping quality consistent
- Kept drive-through times under 60 seconds on average, among the fastest at the location
- Dialed in espresso every morning and adjusted the grind through the day as conditions changed
- Trained 6 new baristas on the espresso bar, milk steaming and the store's recipe standards
- Opened the store at 5:30 a.m. 4 days a week, getting the café ready for the first customer every time
- Cut milk waste by about 20% by steaming to the right amount for each drink size
- Remembered the orders of dozens of regulars, helping the café earn top local customer reviews
Certifications and licences that help
Write each one out in full with the issuing body and the date. An employer should never have to guess what an acronym means or whether it has expired.
- Food Handler Certificate: Ontario's food handler training, FOODSAFE Level 1 in BC, or your province's version. Give the year.
- SCA Barista Skills: A Specialty Coffee Association course. A strong plus at specialty cafés.
- Standard First Aid and CPR: Not required, but useful for opening and closing shifts with small teams.
- Smart Serve or your province's program: Worth having if the café also serves beer or wine.
What recruiters wish you knew
Give your drink speed
Drinks per hour or drive-through times turn "fast-paced" into something a manager can picture. Use a real number from your busiest shifts.
Put your availability in the summary
Early opens and weekends are the hardest shifts to fill. If you can cover them, say so near the top.
Match the café
For a specialty café, lead with coffee skill. For a busy chain, lead with speed and accuracy. The same experience can be described either way.
The section order for a barista resume
Top to bottom, in the order a hiring manager in this field wants to read it.
- Contact details. City, phone and email.
- Professional summary. Your role, the kind of place you worked and when you are available.
- Certifications. Food Handler, Smart Serve or Serving It Right, and WHMIS, with dates.
- Work experience. The type of venue, the volume and your results.
- Skills. Stations, equipment, POS systems and languages.
- Education. The highest level you completed, plus any culinary or hospitality program.
What recruiters check first
A Food Handler certificate, Smart Serve or Serving It Right where alcohol is served, and your availability. Where to put it: Certifications, plus availability in your summary.
Common mistakes on barista resumes
These come up again and again, and each one is quick to fix.
Writing "made coffee"
Show the bar you can run: dialing in espresso, milk texture, latte art, drinks an hour at rush, and the machines you know.
Skipping opening and closing duties
If you open the store, count the cash or close alone, a manager can trust you with the keys. That deserves a bullet of its own.
Forgetting the regulars
Cafés run on repeat customers. Remembering orders, making people feel welcome and staying friendly through the rush all belong on the page.
Before you send it
Six quick checks. Each takes less than a minute.
- The job title in your summary matches the one in the posting.
- Every certification is written out in full, with the issuing body and the expiry date.
- At least half of your bullets include a number.
- There is no photo, date of birth, marital status or SIN.
- It is saved as a PDF, unless the posting asks for a Word file.
- You ran it through the free resume check and fixed what it found.
Barista resume FAQ
What should I put on a barista resume with no experience?
A short summary about your friendliness, reliability and availability, then anything where you served people or worked in a team: volunteering, school events, sports or babysitting. A Food Handler certificate and a genuine interest in coffee are both worth including.
What skills should a barista put on a resume?
Espresso and milk steaming, brew methods, POS and mobile orders, cash handling, food safety and opening or closing. For soft skills, pick friendliness, speed under pressure, multitasking and teamwork.
Do I need a certificate to be a barista in Canada?
Not usually to get hired, but many cafés need certified food handlers on each shift, so a Food Handler certificate (FOODSAFE Level 1 in BC) helps. Coffee courses, such as SCA modules, are a bonus at specialty cafés.
How do I describe barista experience on a resume?
Use numbers and results. Instead of "made coffee", write "Made 80+ drinks an hour during the morning rush". Add anything you were trusted with, like opening, training new staff, inventory or cash-out.
Should a barista resume be one page?
Yes. One page is right for baristas at every level. Keep the most recent and most relevant jobs and cut older ones to a line.
What is a good objective for a barista resume?
One or two lines on your skills and availability. For example: Friendly barista with a year at a busy café, trained in espresso and latte art, looking for early morning and weekend shifts.
